Amreekia min Baba Al Sharayah

by JHSEsq on May 2, 2008

Our nominations seem to be flooded lately with blogs written by Americans who live in other countries. We find the whole thing fascinating. Maybe it is because while we could see visiting so many of these strange lands (meaning strange to us…) to move out of the country is something we have never even considered. Today our guide is Eva whose handle is Queen O’Danile, a rather clever name. She describes her blog as “The adventures of an American expat turned balady Egyptian.”

The blog is called Amreekia min Baba Al Sharayah and we would be lying if we said we had a clue about what the title means. But the post we definitely understand. It is about toilets. Yes, there are differences between the U.S. and Egyptian commodes. The Queen explains, “Also the fact that Egyptian toilets are not as full of water as American toilets are is a strange thing. Where our toilet bowls are at least half full, Egyptian bowls are less than a 1/5 full of water. They usually provide a powerful flush though so it’s all good.” The post is titled Expat Focus: What’s that Funny Little Pipe Hanging in the Toilet?

The post is from April 26, 2008. It will not cure cancer or change your life. But it will shed light on just one of the cultural differences between two countries. Congratulations Eva, you have written The Rising Blogger’s Post of the Day!

Thanks all so much for choosing this post. It is a favorite of mine!

Amreekia Min Bab Al Sharayah actually means An American from the Bab Al Sharayah neighborhood of Cairo. It’s kind of a rough neighborhood–and the people there arent exactly wealthy–but they have hearts of gold. Someone called me that because my spoken Arabic is a bit rough around the edges and full of slang–much like that found in Bab Al Sharayah. I think it’s because I watch too many Egyptian movies on the DISH! ;) ))

Once again…I am honored!
