Resident Alien is a blog written by an American ex-patriot, “I’m an alien: an American who has spent the past twenty-plus years living in Japan, the Netherlands, Wales and Scotland. Thus, a resident alien.” Her name is Mary Whitsell and she is an accomplished writer. She follows some basic rules of writing that many blog authors seem to totally miss. Her stories have beginnings, middles and ends. And most importantly, they have a point. Sometimes they are funny, sometimes ironic and sometimes moral. But Mary always has a point.
In her post of April 10, 2008 titled The Perfect Mate, she plays a word game with students that she was teaching in Japan, “We were doing the Ideal Mate adjective worksheet. All of the students had been given a sheet with a list of adjectives from which they had to rate the various personal attributes listed from 0 to 20 in terms of desirability in a mate. Kimiko had chosen ‘handsome’ over ‘honest,’ ‘gentle,’ and even ‘intelligent.’” Just in the telling, you will find each student’s take on The Perfect Mate interesting.
