Karina Allrich, popular BlogHer author of the gluten-free food blog, Karina’s Kitchen, is also the very talented author of A Painter’s Kitchen. A Painter’s Kitchen explores Karina’s thoughts, photography, feelings, and free writing. The site is pure artistry both aesthetically and in concept and execution. Karina, married to a screenwriter/artist, lives in the remote New Mexico desert, which provides more than ample material for her to create visual magic to share with her readers.
An unfortunate incident occurred recently, caused in part by the disease that caused her to become an expert on gluten-free cooking—she broke her hip. For an active, vibrant artist, this has caused her incredible amounts of inconvenience and adjustments to living her current life in way to which she’s unaccustomed. Even as she describes her frustration and anger at her situation, the words leap off the page, magically eloquent, touching me so deeply, I am almost able to feel what she is feeling. Here is a woman who is experiencing the fallout of one event that has caused a cascade of emotion and thought-provoking self-evaluation.
That’s the beauty of Karina’s blog—she connects on a deep and emotional level with her readers, her brilliant photos touch the soul, and her stories resonate with bold realism that is rarely found all wrapped up in one place.
I can’t help but marvel at what a strange and difficult year it has been, living out here in the desert, far away from my children and an east coast history. It’s not at all like I imagined. It isn’t romantic. Or sexy. Or particularly spiritual. I haven’t painted a thing. Or felt inspired to do so. I just feel– alone. And empty. Which is, perhaps, the core truth of it. And yes, I’ve learned more about myself here, living in isolation, even as I have always lived– apart. In my head. In my introverted nearsighted fragile-boned hesitation. Never the one to fit in, feel a part of, enjoy the comfort of being seen and understood.
