Just Eat Your Cupcake

Neigh­bors are inter­est­ing crea­tures. They can be good or bad, but sel­dom dull. Every once is agreat while a neigh­bor who becomes part of the fam­ily. Maria is the author of the blog Just Eat Your Cup­cake. Years ago Maria and her daugh­ter moved into their neigh­bor­hood and met a boy named Sven. Sven became Liv’s babysit­ter and seemed to have joined Maria’s fam­ily. Our award win­ning post is a let­ter that Maria writes to Sven to wish him well as he goes off to col­lege. It is a post from Sep­tem­ber 18, 2007 titled Dear Sven. The post is touch­ing but not syrupy, “Do you remem­ber the day we met? You came over with your mother to my house with a plate of brown­ies as a house warm­ing gift to say welcome-to-the-neighborhood. You asked me if I had any kids. I pointed at Liv sit­ting in in her playpen. You went over to her, squat­ted down and said, ‘She’ll do.’ You offered her your fin­ger and Liv, who was very wary of strangers, took it imme­di­ately.
