My Marrakesh

by Mimi Lenox

Maryam lives in Marrakesh. Visiting her blog is like stepping into an oasis of beauty and charm. Known for her stunning photographs and exotic style, anyone who reads her blog knows the Moroccan ambiance is only enhanced by her unique style of writing.

Today we recognize Maryam’s literary talent in this self-effacing piece written April 25, 2007 called Dhaka: A girl, a boy, and a sari as the Post of The Day.

This Moroccon beauty writes, “The night of the party, my friend had to dress me. I didn’t know how to wear a sari – how to wrap it, to tuck it, to pin it. It was a complex origami for which I did not know the secret folds. But she folded and folded, and pleated and pleated, so in the end, I was like a beautiful paper swan.”

You’ll love this very real account of a young girl’s butterfly moment and the foolish heart of an unkind suitor who didn’t have the character to recognize that underneath the sari, he was in the presence of a beautiful woman — inside and out.
